With extensive experience revising countless essays, we’ve compiled key recommendations to help you succeed. This guide covers the new Science IA syllabus effective from the May 2025 exam session.
The Physics Internal Assessment (IA), worth 20% of the final score, is graded out of 24 points. The assessment consists of the following criteria:
Criterion A: Research Design (6 points)
Key Components:
- Research Question: State a focused RQ with independent & dependent variables.
- Background Information: Provide relevant theory to show understanding.
- Methodology: Explain, justify, and detail your experimental procedure.
- Safety/Ethical/Environmental Issues: Demonstrate awareness.
For Maximum Points:
- Explain methods for measuring variables.
- Discuss scope, range, frequency, precision of measurements.
- Identify and justify control variables.
- Avoid unnecessary/repetitive info.
Criterion B: Data Analysis (6 points)
Key Components:
- Raw Data: Sufficient & relevant data collected.
- Data Processing: Accurate with uncertainties considered.
- Interpretation: Clear trends, patterns, anomalies explained.
For Maximum Points:
- Precise communication of recording & processing.
- Graphs/tables with correct units, sig figs, uncertainties.
- No major errors or omissions.
Criterion C: Conclusion (6 points)
Key Components:
- Formulate a conclusion answering the RQ.
- Evaluate the reliability of data.
- Compare with literature values & cite sources.
For Maximum Points:
- Conclusion consistent with analysis.
- Supported by processed data & uncertainties.
- Detailed literature comparison with citations.
Criterion D: Evaluation (6 points)
Key Components:
- Strengths and weaknesses of methodology discussed.
- Realistic improvements suggested.
- Possible extensions proposed.
For Maximum Points:
- Highlight specific strengths & limitations.
- Explain impact of weaknesses.
- Propose relevant and realistic improvements.
Other Requirements
- Maintain clear structure within the 3000-word limit.
- Title, candidate code, and word count stated at start.
- Text justified, tables centered, pages numbered.
Final Checklist
- Research Question clearly stated with variables.
- Background information relevant.
- Methodology explained & justified.
- Apparatus listed and steps detailed.
- Safety/ethical/environmental issues addressed.
- Sufficient raw data included.
- Accurate processing with uncertainties.
- Trends, patterns, anomalies identified.
- Conclusion relevant & consistent with data.
- Literature comparison with citations.
- Strengths, weaknesses, improvements evaluated.
- Word limit, formatting, and structure followed.
